Apple Flowering Groups & Pollination Principles
Apple trees require cross-pollination between genetically compatible cultivars that flower at the same time. Flowering windows are standardly categorised into numbered bloom groups (1 through 6). Cultivars reliably cross-pollinate with partners in the same group or immediately adjacent groups (±1 bloom group).
Produce abundant, viable pollen and can fertilise other compatible cultivars. Most commercial apples (e.g. Gala, Honeycrisp, Cox) are diploids requiring 1 compatible partner.
Produce malformed, sterile pollen and cannot fertilise any other apple tree. Triploids (e.g. Jonagold, Bramley) require a 3-way layout with 2 mutually compatible diploid companions.
