Frost evasion advantage: Because it opens its blossoms well after most commercial apple varieties have completed petal fall, Rome Beauty routinely escapes late spring radiation frosts that destroy earlier crops. However, this late flowering requires pairing exclusively with other late-blooming diploids (such as Northern Spy, Golden Delicious, GoldRush, or late-blooming crabapples) to achieve adequate floral overlap.
