Michelin Apple
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Michelin apple pollination guide: diploid bittersweet cider apple, bloom group 5, reliable cropper. Compatible partners and cider orchard management.
Michelin is Self-Sterile (Needs 1 Partner)
Michelin needs at least one compatible pollinizer from bloom group 4–6 to set a reliable crop.
- Chromosome Ploidy
- self sterile
- Required Companions
- 1 Diploid Partner
- Bloom Group
- Group 5 (Late-Spring)
- Harvest Timing
- Late Season (Anchor @ 0d)
Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Apple flowering periods are classified into numbered bloom groups (1 through 6). A variety reliably cross-pollinates with cultivars in its own group or adjacent groups (±1 group).
Any compatible diploid apple flowering within Group 4 to 6 provides matching blossom overlap.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (6)
These varieties overlap in flowering time with Michelin but cannot fertilise it due to sterile pollen (triploids) or shared genetic incompatibility alleles.
Arkansas Black produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Ashmead's Kernel produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Jonagold produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Orleans Reinette produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Stayman Winesap produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Zabergau Reinette produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Grower Commentary: Michelin Regular Cropping and Soft Tannin
Michelin is a diploid, self-sterile bittersweet cider apple raised in Normandy by M. Legrand, first fruiting in 1872. No parent is recorded, so no named cultivar is excluded by descent. Flowering is late, in bloom group 5, and the pollen is viable. Choose other late bloomers as partners, and check the overlap against your own flowering dates.
Harvest falls at about the same time as Golden Delicious in maritime north-west European conditions, and the record lists cider as its use. Michelin is valued for soft tannin and a fairly neutral, sweet juice that forms the base of many blends, and for cropping reliably from year to year while other cider apples swing.
That regularity makes it a sensible foundation block in a cider orchard. Plant on a semi-vigorous rootstock, keep the centre open for light, and thin only when the set is excessive. Shaker or hand harvest from grass alleys suits cider fruit that is picked from the ground, so keep the sward short and clean before drop.
Key Orchard Considerations for Michelin
Use a semi-vigorous rootstock and space for grass alleys and machine access.
Group 5 bloom limits partners; verify overlap with local flowering dates.
Keep sward short before drop; press promptly to protect juice quality.
