Grower Commentary: Envy High Brix, Slow Oxidation & Club Licensing
Envy® (cultivar name Scilate) is a diploid, self-sterile club variety developed by Allan White at HortResearch New Zealand (now Plant & Food Research) from a controlled reciprocal cross of Royal Gala × Braeburn (released 2008). Flowering in bloom group 4 (mid-to-late season), it produces viable pollen and is cross-pollinated effectively by compatible diploids such as Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Fuji, and Honeycrisp.
Strict parentage exclusions: Because Royal Gala and Braeburn are direct parents, neither Gala nor Braeburn can serve as a dependable cross-pollinizer for Envy due to shared S-alleles. Envy is the reciprocal full sibling of Jazz (Braeburn × Gala).
Fruit physiology and storage: Celebrated for its exceptionally dense cellular flesh, high natural soluble solids (15–18° Brix), floral aroma, and very slow oxidation rate after slicing. The thick, tough skin provides outstanding resistance to handling bruising and superficial storage disorders.
Tree management and licensing: The tree exhibits vigorous, upright growth requiring branch bending and canopy training to ensure even sunlight distribution for its deep red wash. Note: Envy is a managed club cultivar with strictly controlled propagation licensing.
