Fall Pippin Apple
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Fall Pippin apple pollination guide: triploid heritage apple, bloom group 3, needs two diploid partners. Large culinary fruit and layout notes.
Fall Pippin is a Triploid (Needs 2 Partners)
Fall Pippin is a triploid: its pollen is sterile, so it cannot fertilise anything — not even the trees planted to pollinate it. It needs TWO compatible pollinizers from bloom group 2–4, which will also pollinate each other.

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Apple flowering periods are classified into numbered bloom groups (1 through 6). A variety reliably cross-pollinates with cultivars in its own group or adjacent groups (±1 group).
Any compatible diploid apple flowering within Group 2 to 4 provides matching blossom overlap.

Grower Commentary: Fall Pippin Triploid Spacing and Large Fruit
Fall Pippin is a large American heritage apple, documented in 1806, and although older lists call it self-sterile, our record treats it as a triploid, measured in the NFC accession work, so its pollen is sterile. Plant it with two diploid cultivars in bloom group 3 that also pollinate each other, and give all three trees enough spacing to flower together.
Harvest falls about three and a half weeks before Golden Delicious in maritime north-west European conditions, and the record lists culinary and dessert uses. The fruit is large and often handles best as a cooking apple in early autumn, with a short storage life compared with true winter keepers.
The catalogue gives good disease resistance, but triploid trees are vigorous and slow to start bearing. Plan a semi-dwarfing rootstock, thin to keep sizes uniform, and expect a wait before the first meaningful crop. Handle large fruit carefully, because heavy apples bruise under their own weight in bins.
Key Orchard Considerations for Fall Pippin
Keep two compatible diploids close and in overlapping bloom; Fall Pippin supplies no pollen.
Triploid vigour delays cropping; use a semi-dwarfing stock and generous spacing.
Big fruit bruises easily; use shallow bins and sell in early autumn.
