Empire is a diploid, self-sterile apple cultivar bred at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva from a controlled cross of McIntosh × Red Delicious (released 1966). Flowering in bloom group 3 (mid-season), it produces abundant viable pollen and requires cross-pollination from compatible diploids like Gala, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Golden Delicious.
Strict parentage exclusions: Inheriting genetic alleles from McIntosh and Red Delicious, neither parent variety can serve as a dependable sole cross-pollinizer for Empire. Offspring sharing parentage (such as Cortland, Macoun, or Spartan) must also be avoided as solitary companion trees in orchard blocks.
Tree architecture and fruit sizing: Empire exhibits a compact, highly productive spur-bearing growth habit with strong natural red fruit coloration. However, trees are prone to setting dense multiple clusters with small average fruit diameter. Aggressive chemical thinning within 14–21 days of petal fall, combined with early hand-thinning, is essential to achieve commercial fresh-market size grades.
