Genetically, Belle de Boskoop is a vigorous triploid variety (3n chromosomes), producing sterile, non-functional pollen that cannot fertilise other apple trees.
The triploid planting layout: Planting Belle de Boskoop requires a three-way orchard layout: Belle de Boskoop plus at least two mutually compatible diploid cultivars flowering in bloom group 3 (such as Gala and Discovery, or Jonathan and James Grieve).
