Frostbite™ Apple
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Frostbite apple pollination guide: diploid, bloom group 3, extremely hardy small-fruited cider and dessert apple. Compatible partners and winter notes.
Frostbite is Self-Sterile (Needs 1 Partner)
Frostbite™ needs at least one compatible pollinizer from bloom group 2–4 to set a reliable crop.
- Chromosome Ploidy
- self sterile
- Required Companions
- 1 Diploid Partner
- Bloom Group
- Group 3 (Mid-Spring)
- Harvest Timing
- Mid (-10d from Golden Delicious)
Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Apple flowering periods are classified into numbered bloom groups (1 through 6). A variety reliably cross-pollinates with cultivars in its own group or adjacent groups (±1 group).
Any compatible diploid apple flowering within Group 2 to 4 provides matching blossom overlap.

Grower Commentary: Frostbite Extreme Hardiness and Small Aromatic Fruit
Frostbite is a diploid, self-sterile apple from the University of Minnesota that the catalogue lists as extremely hardy. It flowers in bloom group 3 with viable pollen, so pair it with other mid-season diploids. Its parentage is unresolved: an older report of Malinda as the seed parent was rejected by DNA work, so no named cultivar is excluded.
Harvest falls about ten days before Golden Delicious in maritime north-west European conditions, and the record lists dessert and cider uses. Fruit is small, aromatic and high in sugar, with a flavour more intense than its size suggests. Growers press it for cider and sell it as a fresh specialty apple.
Small fruit changes the economics, so plan for hand harvest or a pressing market rather than a large-fruit packout. Thin only where the set is excessive, use a hardy rootstock and keep the canopy open. It is chosen for survival in severe winters rather than for yield per tree.
Key Orchard Considerations for Frostbite
Match extreme scion hardiness with a hardy rootstock and a well-drained site.
Fruit is small; target pressing, specialty fresh sales or direct customers.
No named cultivar is excluded by descent; still check bloom overlap with partners.
