Cox's Orange Pippin is an English heritage diploid dessert apple celebrated for its complex, aromatic flavour profile. It is strictly self-sterile and requires pollen from a compatible diploid cultivar flowering within bloom group 3 (mid-season) to set fruit.
Excellent, proven pollination partners for Cox include Discovery, James Grieve, Worcester Pearmain, Fiesta (Red Pippin), Egremont Russet, and Gala. When interplanted with appropriate bee flight corridors, Cox sets reliable crops across maritime temperate regions.
Crucially, several modern cultivars descend directly from Cox and share one or both self-incompatibility alleles. Varieties such as Kidd's Orange Red, Karmijn de Sonnaville, and Ribston Pippin are partially or fully incompatible with Cox and should not be relied upon as single cross-pollinizers.
