Grower Commentary: Cosmic Crisp Vigour, Tip-Bearing & Licensing
Cosmic Crisp® (cultivar name WA 38) is a diploid, self-sterile apple bred by Bruce Barritt at Washington State University from a controlled cross of Enterprise × Honeycrisp (released 2019). Flowering in bloom group 3 (mid-season), it produces fertile pollen and is cross-pollinated effectively by compatible diploids such as Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, and Golden Delicious.
Parentage exclusions: Because WA 38 inherits alleles from Enterprise and Honeycrisp, neither parent cultivar can serve as an effective sole pollination partner. Furthermore, sibling varieties sharing Honeycrisp parentage (such as EverCrisp or SweeTango) should not be relied upon as single companions.
Tree architecture and blind wood: WA 38 displays high vegetative vigor with a pronounced tip-bearing growth habit and a tendency toward blind wood on 2-year limbs. Pruning strategies require 'click pruning' (heading back one-year shoots) or bud notching to stimulate lateral spur formation and avoid unproductive canopy zones.
Fruit quality and licensing: Inheriting the scab-immune genetics of Enterprise, WA 38 exhibits natural resistance to bitter pit and exceptional post-harvest shelf life. WA 38 is a managed club variety with propagation restricted under commercial licensing agreements.
