Ginger Gold® Apple
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Ginger Gold apple pollination guide: diploid, bloom group 3, early yellow dessert apple. Compatible partners, mildew scouting and handling notes.
Ginger Gold is Self-Sterile (Needs 1 Partner)
Ginger Gold needs at least one compatible pollinizer from bloom group 2–4 to set a reliable crop.
- Chromosome Ploidy
- self sterile
- Required Companions
- 1 Diploid Partner
- Bloom Group
- Group 3 (Early-Spring)
- Harvest Timing
- Early (-45d from Golden Delicious)
Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Apple flowering periods are classified into numbered bloom groups (1 through 6). A variety reliably cross-pollinates with cultivars in its own group or adjacent groups (±1 group).
Any compatible diploid apple flowering within Group 2 to 4 provides matching blossom overlap.

Grower Commentary: Ginger Gold Early Harvest and Handling
Ginger Gold is a diploid, self-sterile yellow dessert apple, found as a chance seedling in a replanted Winesap orchard in Virginia. Its parentage is unknown, so no named cultivar is excluded by descent. Bloom falls in group 3 and the pollen is viable, so pair it with other mid-season diploids.
Harvest comes about six and a half weeks before Golden Delicious in maritime north-west European conditions, making it one of the first yellow apples to market. It is a dessert fruit with a short storage life, so match tree numbers to what farm gate and wholesale buyers will take in a brief summer window.
The catalogue gives moderate disease resistance, so scout for mildew and scab and keep the canopy open. Pale skin shows bruising and marking quickly, so use padded bags, shallow bins and a short run to the packhouse. Thin early and pick in more than one pass for even ripeness.
Key Orchard Considerations for Ginger Gold
Use a semi-dwarfing rootstock and open pruning to reduce mildew pressure.
Scout for mildew and scab; plan protection through spring and summer.
Pale skin marks easily; handle gently and sell within days of picking.
