Peaches & Nectarines Cultivars
& Pollination Guide
Compare peach and nectarine flowering, pollen status and chilling needs before choosing cultivars and rootstocks for a block.
Peach Fertility, Nectarines & Chilling
Peaches and nectarines are the same species and can share pollen when bloom overlaps. Most cultivars set fruit with their own pollen, so a partner is not normally required. Pollen-sterile exceptions such as J.H. Hale and Indian Free need a fertile peach or nectarine flowering at the same time.
Redhaven, Elberta and most other peaches make viable pollen and can set a crop alone. A second cultivar is useful for harvest spread or for supplying a pollen-sterile neighbour, not a routine requirement for their own fruit set.
J.H. Hale and Indian Free are diploid but make no viable pollen. They need an overlapping self-fertile peach or nectarine donor and cannot pollinate each other or any other tree.
Nectarines are fuzzless forms of Prunus persica, with the same pollination pool and compatible peach rootstock choices. A fertile nectarine can pollinate a pollen-sterile peach when their flowers overlap.
The curated range spans roughly 175 hours below 7.2°C for FloridaPrince to about 1,050 hours for Contender. Chill estimates are model-specific; compare them with local winter records before ordering trees.
