Halehaven Peach
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Halehaven peach pollination guide: self-fertile Group 3 bloom despite J.H. Hale parentage, plus rootstock and thinning notes.
Halehaven is Self-Fertile (Sets Fruit Alone)
Michigan State / Stanley Johnston (1932). Unlike its female parent J.H. Hale, Halehaven has functional pollen and is self-fertile.

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Peaches and nectarines are the same species and can share pollen when bloom overlaps. Most cultivars set fruit with their own pollen, so a partner is not normally required. Pollen-sterile exceptions such as J.H. Hale and Indian Free need a fertile peach or nectarine flowering at the same time.
Halehaven flowers within the peach Group 2–4 overlap window. Only pollen-sterile cultivars require a separate fertile peach or nectarine donor.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (3)
These cultivars cannot serve as pollinizers for Halehaven because their pollen is sterile, flowering does not overlap, or a documented close relationship excludes the pairing.
A direct parent (Halehaven seedling) — roughly half the pollen is non-functional, so it is not a reliable partner.
Indian Free produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
A direct parent (J.H. Hale × South Haven) — roughly half the pollen is non-functional, so it is not a reliable partner.
Grower Commentary: Halehaven Is Not Pollen-Sterile
Halehaven is a documented offspring of J.H. Hale and South Haven, yet its own pollen is fertile. It is a self-fertile Group 3 peach that can crop without a companion and may donate to a pollen-sterile neighbour when bloom overlaps. The distinction is worth checking on nursery lists: pollen sterility in the parent does not automatically apply to a named offspring, and similar cultivar names are not a reliable fertility test.
The current record provides no cultivar-specific chill value for Halehaven. Use regional trials and winter records before assuming it shares the requirement of J.H. Hale. A strong set still needs thinning to protect fruit size, and the mixed fresh or canning outlet needs harvest planned around maturity rather than the pollination schedule. Watch late spring cold separately from dormant winter survival.
Peach produces fruit on one-year shoots, so prune to keep new growth distributed across an open canopy. Choose a peach-compatible rootstock suited to drainage and soil history, and verify the nursery's graft combination. Myrobalan, Marianna, St Julien and Wavit are plum rootstocks incompatible with peach. Where a Halehaven row doubles as the donor for J.H. Hale, keep the trees close enough for insects and record actual overlap each spring.
Key Orchard Considerations for Halehaven
Unlike J.H. Hale, Halehaven sets alone and supplies viable Group 3 pollen where flowers overlap.
No Halehaven-specific chill figure is stored; do not borrow its pollen-sterile parent's estimate.
Use roots compatible with peach, avoiding St Julien, Wavit and other incompatible plum stocks.
