Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Peaches and nectarines are the same species and can share pollen when bloom overlaps. Most cultivars set fruit with their own pollen, so a partner is not normally required. Pollen-sterile exceptions such as J.H. Hale and Indian Free need a fertile peach or nectarine flowering at the same time.
Reliance flowers within the peach Group 2–4 overlap window. Only pollen-sterile cultivars require a separate fertile peach or nectarine donor.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (2)
These cultivars cannot serve as pollinizers for Reliance because their pollen is sterile, flowering does not overlap, or a documented close relationship excludes the pairing.
Indian Free produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
J.H. Hale produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Grower Commentary: Reliance Beyond Winter Hardiness
Reliance is a self-fertile peach in Group 3 with viable pollen. It does not require an interplanted donor, and it may support a pollen-sterile neighbour when bloom days overlap. The cultivar is noted for exceptional flower-bud cold hardiness, a useful trait for northern peach growing. That characteristic should be considered alongside site frost drainage rather than treated as protection against every damaging spring night.
The current structured record does not provide a cultivar-specific chill value, so avoid assigning an unsupported number from another peach. Compare regional trial results and actual winter conditions before expanding a block. Reliance can crop strongly where flowers survive, requiring fruit thinning for usable size and canopy balance. Record both bud injury and set after a cold event; a self-fertile tree can still have too few sound flowers to crop.
For training, retain annual one-year shoots while removing old, shaded wood that will not bear well. Select a peach-compatible rootstock that matches cold soil and drainage; Bailey or another regional peach seedling may be considered with a nursery. Myrobalan, Marianna, St Julien and Wavit are not compatible choices. Plan harvest access around the early fruit window and do not let a heavy crop suppress renewal growth.
Key Orchard Considerations for Reliance
Group 3 Reliance sets alone and may pollinate a sterile peach with matching bloom.
Cold-hardy buds do not remove open-flower frost risk; no verified cultivar chill number is stored.
Match roots to cold soil and drainage, avoiding Myrobalan, St Julien and Wavit.
