Contender Peach
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Contender peach pollination guide: self-fertile Group 4 bloom, high chilling need and cold-hardy flower buds.
Contender is Self-Fertile (Sets Fruit Alone)

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Peaches and nectarines are the same species and can share pollen when bloom overlaps. Most cultivars set fruit with their own pollen, so a partner is not normally required. Pollen-sterile exceptions such as J.H. Hale and Indian Free need a fertile peach or nectarine flowering at the same time.
Contender flowers within the peach Group 3–5 overlap window. Only pollen-sterile cultivars require a separate fertile peach or nectarine donor.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (2)
These cultivars cannot serve as pollinizers for Contender because their pollen is sterile, flowering does not overlap, or a documented close relationship excludes the pairing.
Indian Free produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
J.H. Hale produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Grower Commentary: Contender's Cold-Climate Fit
Contender is a self-fertile peach with viable pollen, so its own crop does not depend on a second cultivar. Our corrected record places bloom in Group 4, and the source notes strong flower-bud cold hardiness. A fertile Contender can help a pollen-sterile peach where the bloom windows meet, but a later Group 4 donor should not be assumed to cover an earlier recipient without local flowering records.
The source record describes a high chilling requirement of roughly 1,050 hours, beyond the upper figure in the original track shortlist. That makes Contender a candidate for winters that regularly provide substantial chill, not a low-chill site. Dormant-bud hardiness and open-blossom frost exposure are different: even a hardy tree can lose a crop after warm weather brings flowers out before a late freeze. Maintain a frost-draining site.
Peach sets more fruit than it can size in a favourable year, so thin early and leave enough new shoots for next season's bearing wood. A cold-site rootstock choice should consider winter soil conditions as well as scion performance; Bailey is one peach seedling option, subject to nursery advice. Do not graft onto the Myrobalan, Marianna or St Julien stocks used for plums. Keep the training form accessible for pruning and harvest.
Key Orchard Considerations for Contender
Contender sets alone and donates viable pollen when its later bloom overlaps a sterile peach.
The source notes roughly 1,050 chill hours; check winter accumulation and spring frost separately.
Choose a peach-compatible stock suited to winter soil conditions; plum rootstocks remain unsuitable.
