Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Peaches and nectarines are the same species and can share pollen when bloom overlaps. Most cultivars set fruit with their own pollen, so a partner is not normally required. Pollen-sterile exceptions such as J.H. Hale and Indian Free need a fertile peach or nectarine flowering at the same time.
Summergrand flowers within the peach Group 2–4 overlap window. Only pollen-sterile cultivars require a separate fertile peach or nectarine donor.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (2)
These cultivars cannot serve as pollinizers for Summergrand because their pollen is sterile, flowering does not overlap, or a documented close relationship excludes the pairing.
Indian Free produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
J.H. Hale produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Grower Commentary: Summergrand in the Peach Pool
Summergrand is a yellow-fleshed freestone nectarine, and botanically it is a peach with smooth skin. Its verified pomology record places bloom in Group 3 and confirms viable pollen and self-fertility. It can carry its own crop or donate to a pollen-sterile peach such as J.H. Hale when their blossoms overlap. The catalog's older Group 2 label should not override the corrected record when planning the donor row.
The present record does not store a Summergrand-specific chill figure, so compare the cultivar with regional winter and bloom experience rather than borrowing a peach estimate. Nectarine skin is more exposed to rain cracking, russet and brown rot than fuzzy peach skin, making canopy drying and timely picking important. Thin a strong set for fruit size and keep fruit handling gentle enough for the intended fresh outlet.
Summergrand shares peach rootstock rules and fruits on one-year shoots. Prune for annual replacement wood and preserve light through the canopy; old shaded framework alone will not maintain a regular crop. Select a peach-compatible stock for drainage and replant pressure. Myrobalan, Marianna, St Julien and Wavit are unsuitable, even though they may carry neighbouring plum rows. A nectarines-and-peaches mix still needs spring frost drainage despite its simple fertility genetics.
Key Orchard Considerations for Summergrand
Self-fertile Group 3 Summergrand can pollinate an overlapping sterile peach or nectarine.
No cultivar chill value is stored; monitor rain cracking, russet and brown rot around the fresh-fruit picking window.
Use peach-compatible roots and retain one-year fruiting shoots; plum stocks such as St Julien are unsuitable.
