Van Sweet Cherry Pollination Dynamics & Orchard Care
Van is a premier commercial and pollinizer sweet cherry introduced by the Summerland Research Station in British Columbia. Renowned for its compact, heavy-cropping clusters of glossy, dark mahogany fruit with rich, firm flesh, Van is widely planted both for its high market quality and as a workhorse pollen donor across commercial orchards.
Classified in Incompatibility Group II with the S1S3 genotype, Van is self-sterile and mutually incompatible with other Group II cherries, notably Regina (S1S3). However, Van is an outstanding pollen source for Group III (Bing, Emperor Francis), Group IX (Rainier), and Group XIII (Schmidt) varieties flowering in Bloom Group 3.
When pairing Van with self-fertile cultivars like Lapins (S1S4′) or Sweetheart (S3S4′), growers must note the asymmetric genetic relationship: Lapins pollen fertilises Van with 100% success, but Van pollen on Lapins is only semi-compatible due to their shared S1 allele. Pair Van with Rainier, Bing, or Skeena for completely clean two-way pollination.

Van sets heavily on short spurs, often leading to overcropping and reduced fruit size. Implement regular renewal pruning and stub back older fruiting spurs to maintain large 9.5-row fruit diameter.
