Released in 1968 by the Summerland Research Station in British Columbia (Lambert × John Innes 2420), Stella was the world's first commercially viable self-fertile sweet cherry, eliminating the requirement for companion pollinizers in traditional commercial and home orchard layouts.
Stella carries the breakthrough S3S4′ genotype, placing it in the Self-Compatible group (SC). The mutated S4′ allele enables self-pollination while conferring universal pollen donor capability: Stella pollen is genetically accepted by every other sweet cherry cultivar regardless of incompatibility group, S-allele combination, or ploidy structure in the orchard.
Blossoming in Bloom Group 3, Stella is ideal as a standalone single-tree planting or as a high-efficiency pollinizer row within commercial blocks of Bing, Rainier, or Van, providing reliable weather insurance, high pollen viability, and heavy fruit set across the entire bloom window in temperate climates.
