Sunburst Sweet Cherry
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Sunburst cherry pollination guide: self-fertile S4′ genetics, large fruit sizing, universal donor value, bloom overlap, and orchard management.
Sunburst is Self-Fertile (Universal Pollen Donor)
Sunburst will set a crop planted on its own. A nearby partner can still lift fruit set.

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Sweet and sour cherry flowering periods are classified into numbered bloom groups (1 through 5). Cross-pollination requires overlapping bloom timing between genetically compatible cultivars.
Any compatible cherry cultivar flowering within Group 2 to 4 provides matching blossom overlap.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (2)
These cherry varieties overlap in flowering time with Sunburst but cannot fertilise it due to shared S-allele genetic incompatibility groups.
Merton Glory's S-genotype is not recorded. For this crop compatibility is computed from S-alleles, so it cannot be offered as a partner without one.
Utah Giant's S-genotype is not recorded. For this crop compatibility is computed from S-alleles, so it cannot be offered as a partner without one.
Sunburst Sweet Cherry Pollination & Heavy-Cropping Care
Sunburst is an outstanding self-fertile sweet cherry developed at the Summerland Research Station in British Columbia (Van × Stella). Renowned for producing exceptionally large, dark red, glossy fruit with soft, succulent flesh and rich sweet juice, Sunburst is a celebrated favourite for pick-your-own orchards and fresh home consumption across temperate fruit growing regions.
Inheriting the S4′ mutation from Stella, Sunburst carries the S3S4′ genotype (Group SC). It is completely self-fertile and sets heavy, dependable crops without companion pollinizers. Like Stella, it serves as a universal pollen donor for all compatible sweet cherries flowering across its season, fertilising partner varieties with ease.
Sunburst flowers in mid-spring (Bloom Group 3). Its vigorous flowering habit and self-compatibility provide reliable pollination security even when spring weather is cool and pollinator flight is restricted, ensuring heavy annual cropping without the necessity of companion partner trees in the block.
The impressive size of Sunburst cherries commands immediate consumer attention, though gentle hand picking is essential to preserve the tender fruit skin.
Key Orchard Considerations for Sunburst
Sunburst naturally produces some of the largest fruit in the sweet cherry catalog, frequently exceeding 10-row size when tree nutrition and moisture are maintained.
High self-fertility can lead to heavy fruit clusters on spurs. Conduct selective spur pruning in winter to reduce overcrowding and protect against brown rot.
Because flesh is softer than Bing or Lapins, harvest during the cool morning hours and handle gently to avoid pressure bruising on fresh-market packing lines.
