Chelan Sweet Cherry
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Chelan cherry pollination guide: S-genotype (S3S9, Group XVI), early bloom overlap, compatible pollinizers (Lapins, Sweetheart), and orchard care.
Chelan is Self-Incompatible (Needs 1 Partner)
Group XVI, shared with Burlat and Tieton. Chelan needs at least one compatible pollinizer from bloom group 1–3 to set a reliable crop.

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Sweet and sour cherry flowering periods are classified into numbered bloom groups (1 through 5). Cross-pollination requires overlapping bloom timing between genetically compatible cultivars.
Any compatible cherry cultivar flowering within Group 1 to 3 provides matching blossom overlap.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (1)
These cherry varieties overlap in flowering time with Chelan but cannot fertilise it due to shared S-allele genetic incompatibility groups.
Merton Glory's S-genotype is not recorded. For this crop compatibility is computed from S-alleles, so it cannot be offered as a partner without one.
Chelan Sweet Cherry Pollination & Early-Season Culture
Chelan is an essential early-market sweet cherry developed at the Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center in Prosser, Washington (Stella × PC 7144-6). Ripening nearly two full weeks ahead of Bing, Chelan produces medium-to-large, round-heart shaped mahogany fruit with firm crisp flesh, moderate sweetness, and remarkable field resistance to rain-induced cracking in humid spring weather.
Genetically, Chelan is self-incompatible with the S3S9 genotype, placing it in Incompatibility Group XVI. It cannot pollinate itself or fellow Group XVI selections (such as Burlat and Tieton). However, Chelan is fully cross-compatible with Black Tartarian (S1S2), Lapins (S1S4′), Sweetheart (S3S4′), Skeena (S1S4′), and Stella (S3S4′), receiving pollen freely across overlapping flowering periods.
Chelan blooms early in Bloom Group 2. Pairing it with early-blooming diploid cherries and reliable self-fertile universal donors ensures dependable cross-pollination, establishing high commercial crop potential for the opening weeks of the fresh cherry harvest across commercial stone fruit growing districts and northern orchard regions.
Key Orchard Considerations for Chelan
Chelan possesses superior crack resistance compared to Bing and Rainier, providing crucial insurance for early harvests in regions where late spring storms are common.
Because of its early bloom date, Chelan is among the first varieties to expose tender flower buds. Locate blocks on elevated terrain with excellent air drainage.
Fruit darkens well before full sugar accumulation. Allow fruit to reach deep mahogany skin colour with 16°+ Brix to maximize eating quality and consumer satisfaction.
