Developed at Washington State University (Bing × Van), Rainier commands elite fresh-market returns but presents exacting horticultural and pollination requirements. Trees are vigorous, upright-spreading, and heavy croppers when adequately cross-pollinated.
Genetically, Rainier carries the S1S4 genotype, placing it in Incompatibility Group IX. It is gametophytically self-incompatible and cannot set fruit with its own pollen or with other Group IX cultivars. While Bing (S3S4) and Van (S1S3) are its historical parents, they share only one S-allele each with Rainier, making them fully compatible reciprocal pollen donors that provide matching mid-season bloom overlap.
For maximum fruit set and yield security, plant Rainier alongside self-fertile universal donors like Lapins (S1S4′) or Sweetheart (S3S4′).
