Discovered near Philadelphia in the late 18th century, Seckel is often termed the 'sugar pear' due to its exceptionally high soluble solids and intense, spicy-sweet honeyed flavour. The fruit is petite, chubby, and yellowish-brown with a distinctive reddish-bronze cheek.
Seckel is a diploid variety that flowers in Bloom Group 2 (early mid-season). Orchard planners must observe an essential genetic exclusion: Seckel and Bartlett share S-allele incompatibility and cannot cross-pollinate each other. To fertilise Seckel, growers should interplant compatible diploids such as Moonglow, Harrow Delight, Conference, or Beth.
The tree forms a dense, compact, round-topped canopy that requires regular thinning cuts to open interior shoots to light. It is naturally hardy, productive, and reliable, bearing heavily on short spurs without excessive biennial swings. Fruit thinning is especially critical for Seckel: while the tree sets heavily, unthinned branches produce fruit too small for commercial fresh market bins.
