Luscious Pear
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Luscious pear pollination guide: male-sterile diploid genetics, early bloom partner requirements, extreme hardiness, and orchard layout.
Luscious is Male-Sterile (Needs 1 Partner · Cannot Donate Pollen)
South Dakota State University release (1973; Ewart × SD 39-179). MALE-STERILE — produces non-viable pollen and cannot pollinate other trees. Requires a cold-hardy pollinizer such as Parker or Patten. Luscious needs at least one compatible pollinizer from bloom group 1–3 to set a reliable crop.

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Pear flowering periods are compressed into numbered bloom groups (1 through 4). Cross-pollination requires overlapping blossom timing between genetically compatible cultivars, with Asian pears flowering 7–14 days ahead of mid-season European varieties.
Any compatible diploid pear flowering within Group 1 to 3 provides matching blossom overlap.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (3)
These pear varieties overlap in flowering time with Luscious but cannot fertilise it due to non-viable pollen (male-sterile diploids), direct parentage exclusions, or shared incompatibility alleles.
Gourmet produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Magness produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Warren produces no viable pollen, so it cannot serve as a pollinizer.
Pomological Assessment: Male Sterility, Early Blossom Window & Winter Hardiness
Introduced by South Dakota State University in 1973 from a cross of Ewart and Arganche, Luscious is celebrated across northern fruit-growing regions for its ability to withstand -35°C winter freezes while producing bright yellow dessert pears with remarkably sweet, melting flesh.
Orchard layout requires strict attention to pollination mechanics: Luscious produces non-viable pollen and is functionally male-sterile. It cannot pollinate any other tree. Furthermore, Luscious flowers early (Bloom Group 2). To secure a commercial crop, growers must interplant it with a viable, early-flowering diploid companion such as Moonglow, Harrow Delight, Golden Spice, or Seckel.
Trees are upright and vigorous, producing attractive glossy foliage that resists late-season defoliation. Its early bloom window requires planting on elevated slopes or frost-drained orchard sites to avoid radiation frost damage to open flowers. Its exceptional wood hardiness and resistance to fire blight cankers ensure long tree longevity in challenging northern locations, providing dependable fruit production where European commercial standards cannot survive the winter.
Key Orchard Considerations for Luscious
Best grafted onto cold-tolerant Pyrus communis or Pyrus ussuriensis seedling roots, or OHxF 87 where available. Quince rootstocks lack sufficient root-zone cold hardiness for northern zones where Luscious is planted.
Displays good overall resistance to fire blight and excellent tolerance to bacterial shoot blast following spring frosts.
Harvests early-to-mid season (late August to early September). Flesh softens quickly off the branch; not suited for prolonged commercial cold storage. Ideal for immediate farm-gate sales and home processing.
