Victoria European Plum
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Victoria plum pollination, Pool A partners, Group 3 bloom and crop-load management for a dual-purpose European plum.
Victoria is Self-Fertile (Pool A)
Dual-purpose, self-fertile. Partners: Czar, Opal, Cambridge Gage, Marjorie's Seedling. The reference's own over-set/biennial-bearing example — 'Victoria is the notorious case'.

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Plum bloom groups run from 1 to 5. A useful partner flowers in the same or adjacent group and belongs to the same pollination pool. European plums, gages and damsons are Pool A; Japanese plums and prairie hybrids are Pool B. A tree from one pool cannot pollinate the other.
For Victoria, select a compatible plum in the same pollination pool flowering from Group 2 to 4; bloom overlap alone does not bridge Pool A and Pool B.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (5)
These cultivars cannot serve as pollinizers for Victoria because of a different plum pollination pool, a documented incompatibility or another exclusion in the source data.
plum incompatibility groups are only partly mapped, so only cultivars documented as reliable donors are offered. Green Gage (Reine Claude) is not one of them — that is a gap in the data, not evidence it is incompatible.

Grower Commentary: Victoria Set and Crop Load
Victoria is a self-fertile European plum in Pool A, flowering in Group 3. A single tree can set fruit, but another Pool A cultivar with overlapping bloom, such as Opal, provides insurance when cold weather shortens insect flight. Japanese plums belong to Pool B and cannot replace that companion, however closely their flowering dates appear to match in a nursery list.
The practical challenge with Victoria is often too much fruit rather than too little. Heavy set can leave small plums, strain brittle scaffold wood and weaken the next year's flower-bud formation. Check developing fruit after natural drop and thin crowded clusters while they are still small. A pollinizer improves the opportunity for set; it does not remove the need to manage the resulting load.
Its dual-purpose fruit suits fresh sales and cooking, so harvest and grading can be planned for more than one outlet. For a modest bush block, St Julien A or Wavit gives a manageable tree; Myrobalan needs much more space. Keep the canopy open enough for light and picking access, and avoid a low frost pocket even though Victoria supplies its own pollen.
Key Orchard Considerations for Victoria
Self-fertile in Group 3; Opal or another overlapping European plum may improve set. Pool B Japanese plums cannot pollinate it.
Inspect fruitlets after natural drop and remove crowded clusters before fruit size and scaffold strength suffer.
Choose a frost-draining site and match bush spacing to the vigour of St Julien A, Wavit or a larger stock.
