Toka Hybrid Plum
Pollination & Compatibility Guide
Toka hybrid plum pollination: Pool B Group 2 bloom, reliable pollen donation and its own partner requirement.
Toka Needs a Compatible Pool B Partner
Prairie hybrid (P. americana × P. salicina). Same physical cultivar as 'Bubblegum Plum (Toka)'. Toka (Hybrid) needs at least one compatible pollinizer from bloom group 1–3 to set a reliable crop.

Flowering Period & Overlap Window
Plum bloom groups run from 1 to 5. A useful partner flowers in the same or adjacent group and belongs to the same pollination pool. European plums, gages and damsons are Pool A; Japanese plums and prairie hybrids are Pool B. A tree from one pool cannot pollinate the other.
For Toka, select a compatible plum in the same pollination pool flowering from Group 1 to 3; bloom overlap alone does not bridge Pool A and Pool B.

Incompatible Varieties & Exclusions (11)
These cultivars cannot serve as pollinizers for Toka because of a different plum pollination pool, a documented incompatibility or another exclusion in the source data.
plum incompatibility groups are only partly mapped, so only cultivars documented as reliable donors are offered. American Plum is not one of them — that is a gap in the data, not evidence it is incompatible.

Grower Commentary: Toka Gives Pollen but Needs It Too
Toka is a Japanese-American prairie hybrid assigned to Pool B. Our record marks it as a reliable pollen donor within that pool, but also requires one compatible partner for Toka's own crop. This distinction matters in a two-variety block: a tree can fertilise a neighbour and still need pollen returned. Toka flowers in Group 2; select an independently compatible Pool B companion with overlapping bloom.
Catalogs may also list the same physical cultivar as Bubblegum Plum. Buying both names does not create a two-cultivar pollinizer design, because two labels for one clone are still one genetic variety. Confirm the nursery identity of every companion before ordering. A self-fertile Pool B donor such as Methley offers a clearer independent source, subject to actual bloom overlap on the site.
Prairie hybrid use often reflects a colder growing district, but early blossom remains exposed to frost even where dormant wood survives winter well. Check cold-air drainage and observe bee activity during Toka's open flowers. Keep a manageable canopy and thin overloaded branches after set. Choose rootstock with local nursery advice, since a stock that handles wet soil or winter cold may carry a different vigour and support requirement.
Key Orchard Considerations for Toka
Toka donates Pool B pollen but needs one compatible partner for its own reliable crop.
Toka and Bubblegum Plum are the same physical cultivar; they cannot be counted as two distinct partners.
Group 2 flowers still need frost drainage and bee-flight weather despite the cultivar's prairie use.
